Clay is a versatile building material used to create beautiful and durable structures for thousands of years.  Clay can be formed into building blocks (such as adobe) or monolithic walls (such as rammed earth or cob).  Cob combines clay, sand, and chopped straw to create beautiful & durable walls with high thermal mass.  Sand provides strength and resistance to cracking; straw provides tensile strength, and clay binds all ingredients together.  Sculpted cob thermal mass walls can store the sun's heat energy in passive solar design or can provide thermal storage for a masonry heater.

WORKSHOP INCLUDES
  • overview of cob construction, including description of ingredients, testing soils for clay content, and mixing techniques

  • guided hands-on experience mixing cob and building a wall, including how to create niches
